I've been spending a lot of time with Google presentations. I have a presentation next Friday. I laid out my first few slides in Google and then I decided for now it's back to Powerpoint. As much as I love Google's approach to simple interfaces and design, presentations is a little too simple, when it comes to functions. I think a presentation app is where Adobe Flex and Flash will shine. There are already good examples like ScrapBlog, Spresent and SlideRocket (which I'm dying to get an invite to try.)

If Google presentation is to survive they need to think about adding a few things and fixing a lot.

  1. Uploaded graphics look terrible. This is the main reason I went back to Powerpoint. I wanted a few screen shots and they just looked grainy and poorly sized.
  2. They need to support at least some simple transitions.
  3. Syncing to an MP3 audio file like SlideShare and Spresent will be a must. It's a great way to make your presentations available after the fact with audio.
  4. I'd like to see a function to combine slide shows. I had three people provide me with slides in Powerpoint and the only way to get them into my already existing Google presentation would have been to cut and paste them one slide at a time.

I'm sure if I wasn't about to doze off I could think of a few more. I do like the way you can share and run the presentation with Gtalk built in and of course the collaboration features are great. I'm sure we'll see these features added over the next few months and then I'll give it another serious look.
