Hundreds of thousands of loyal WCBS-FM (101.1) listeners are experiencing a communal rude shock upon learning that the heritage oldies outlet has been abruptly transformed into "101.1 Jack FM", a new station featuring a rock-leaning Hot AC format that has been introduced in a number of major radio markets nationally. The new format debuted at 5 PM on Friday, June 3rd, bringing to a close nearly 33 years of oldies on CBS-FM.
WCBS-FM airstaff reportedly were not made aware of the impending switch until Friday afternoon, thus preventing dj`s such as Bill Brown, Bob Shannon, Bruce Morrow, and Harry Harrison from saying farewell to their listeners. Ironically, morning dj Micky Dolenz celebrated his 100th show with a live broadcast from B.B. King`s on Friday morning, apparently unaware of his soon-to-be unemployed status. The "Jack FM" format heralds its "unique mix" of music, which consists of rock and pop hits from the 70`s on played without dj`s. With Infinity Broadcasting no longer interested in playing oldies in New York, a number of other station owners are expected to consider adopting the format.
