Movie Visual Effects

A few weeks ago I went to my local library to see a presentation called "Kaboom! The History of Visual Effect in Film".

Before I went I put together my own short list of people and films that I would have discussed if I were doing the presentation. This is not my all encompassing list, but the ones I feel need to be mentioned when discussing the topic. Here's it is. The items with an * were NOT covered in the actual presentation.
Georges Méliès
Willis O'Brien

The Lost World
Metropolis
King Kong
*The Invisible Man
*The Lydecker Brothers
Ray Harryhausen
Jason and the Argonauts
George Pal
War of the Worlds
Star Wars
ILM
*Rick Baker
Tron

I think the three from my list that were left out are significant.

The Invisible Man had amazing groundbreaking visual effects for 1933. I guess it was overshadowed by King Kong.

The Lydecker brothers would probably not make it to many lists but they did amazing effects with models, natural lighting and perspective. Watch any of the Republic movie serials and you'll see they were the best. After the serials they went onto television and did effects for Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. They were truly Miniature Effect Geniuses.

Rick Baker created the concept of Makeup Special Effects. If for nothing else he should be remembered for the transformation in "An American Werewolf in London".

I'm sure I've left some out. Let me know.
